Community Alert – Beware of Fake AI-Generated Adverts

Dear Members,

Scammers are increasingly using AI-generated images and adverts on social media to promote fake products and fraudulent websites. These adverts often look professional and convincing, making it harder to spot scams.

According to recent reports, millions of pounds have been lost to purchase scams where victims pay for items that never arrive or receive poor-quality goods. For example, Which? found multiple fake adverts for a fashion store called Mabel & Daisy that used AI-created images to lure shoppers.

How to spot and avoid scam adverts:

Images that look too perfect or cartoonish: AI-generated pictures often appear overly polished or unrealistic. Use an image search tool (e.g., Google) to check if the image appears elsewhere.

Unrealistic offers: Flash sales with heavy discounts or deals on sold-out goods are common red flags.

Suspicious website addresses: Check the domain on who.is to see when it was created. Newly registered sites are often fraudulent.

Negative reviews: Look for multiple complaints about scams, poor-quality items, or refund issues.

What to do if you encounter a scam:

Report suspicious ads on Facebook or Instagram by clicking the three dots on the ad and selecting ‘Report’.

If you lose money, contact your bank immediately using the number on the back of your card and report the fraud at Report Fraud or call 0300 123 2040.
